cornhole boards Buyer’s Guide
Choosing Cornhole Bags
If you get a decent set of cornhole boards from a reputable company, they should come with a full set of cornhole bags. Sometimes there are sets that are sold a la carte so the buyer can control the cost, just like this Do-It-Yourself Set.
By the way, I always think it’s important for the buyer to be in control, words I live by.
Believe it or not, cornhole bags come in a few different variations, and it’s important to understand what each style provides, and if it’s important to you or not. I love the new pro style bags that are all the rave but not everyone wants to pay the premium price tag for them. They are generally twice the cost of a set of corn-filled bags but I’ll tell you what, you will have to replace the corn filled bags or times before you replace your pro bags. The old saying applies… you get what you pay for.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not bearish on corn-filled bags either. I’ve played more games in my life with these classic bags than any other type of bag. Once again, if you purchase from a good company, your classic bags will be worth every penny.
Court Setup
First things first. We have to set up the court. This is done by placing a board on a flat surface. Then measure off 27’ and place the other board directly across from the first one. This measurement should be from front end to front end. That’s it for the cornhole boards.
Teams or Singles
You can play this game with teams (vs. 2) or singles. If you’re playing teams then you stand at one end of the court next to the boards, and your teammate stands directly across from you on the other end of the court so you are looking straight at your teammate. The other team is on the opposite sides of the boards. If you are playing singles, then you will walk from one end of the court to the other after each inning.
Tossing Cornhole Bags
Here’s where the competition begins. When playing teams, each team gets four bags. All bags start on one side of the court. You will alternate tossing the bags against your opponent. You can decide who will throw first by flipping a coin. Now it’s time to get started. You throw, then your opponent throws until all bags have made it to the other end of the court. Then the other side will pitch them back in the same alternating fashion. If you’re playing singles, you will walk from end to end after each inning.
How To Score
Scoring is pretty simple. You will use a cancellation scoring system. You get point for landing the bag on the board (called a woody) and points for getting it in the hole (a cornhole). After all bags have been thrown you take the net score to see who actually get points. First team to 2wins.
Tools you need
Here is a list of tools that we are going to use for this project. However not every tool from this list is necessary, but the more power tools you have the better.
Keep an eye on anybody who is cutting the wood. Make sure that dimensions are exactly as recommended by American Cornhole Association.
Supplies you need
These supplies can be bought at almost any hardware or tool store, including Home Depot.
As you probably already know, the more quantity you buy the cheaper a material is per inch. So consider buying supplies for or more boards at once, this will lower the cost per board.
Make sure to choose excellent lumber and plywood without any defects on it. You want to have perfectly smooth board surface.
Building the frame
Now that you have prepared the wood, its time to construct the frame.
To connect the woods use wood screws with dimension of ½ inches. You can use clamps to hold the frame all together while you are connecting each wood part wit screws.
Cutting the hole
First, you need to precisely mark where you are going to cut the hole.
The center of the hole should be inches from the top and 1inches from each (left and right) side of the board edges. Use pencil to mark the hole center.
Use compass to draw the hole circle. It should be inches in diameter.
Now the fun part! Its time to cut the hole. Please, be very careful and take your time for this task.
First, create a small hole using your biggest drill. This will be your starting point for hole cutting. The hole should be somewhere on the hole circle line.
The legs have two main goals
First you need to prepare the legs for bolts. Using pencil mark the spot where bolt is going to pass through.
Simply turn the board upside down and place the leg where it is supposed to be. About inches from the top side.
Mark where the bolt is going to pass through. Make sure to mark both the legs and side frame.
Use compass to create half circle at the top side of the legs. This will ensure legs to move and to be folded.
Create the holes using drill.
Cut out the half circle part that you previously marked with compass. The cut is probably not going to be perfect, so use sandpaper to perfect the edges.
Using washer, bolt and nut, attach the legs to the board frame. Once attached the legs should be freely movable without any difficulties. If its hard to move the legs, then find out what is causing the problem.
Now its time to cut the legs so that when they are extended the back side of the board should be 1inches high.
Place the board on a table and extend the legs (legs should be hanging off the table). Under the board place something that is going to hold the whole board construction at 1inches height.
Cut the legs exactly in the place where table intersects with legs while the board is supported by 1inch object underneath.
Make it smooth
Next, you need to sand the wood using medium sandpaper. This will ensure smooth playing surface without any thorns that might damage cornhole bags.
Make sure to sand every part of cornhole board, especially sharp edges and spots where parts, such as legs, connect.
Sand down every discrepancies! Make it perfectly smooth! Keep an eye on parts where different wood types connect.
Material
Regulated by ACA, the material of the board should be made from standard plywood to guarantee minimal bounces and slips while playing. Although there are other types of materials such as metal and plastic, they’re discouraged because these materials might change the gameplay experience.
Paint requirements
All boards should be covered with a latex paint that allows the bags to slide up the board’s surface with ease. Besides, the preferred color is the white, especially in professional matches. Of course, you also pain it with different colors but make sure they are easy to see.
Slick Woody’s Burnt Wood Cornhole Set
If you have a pocket clicking with plenty of money, try noticing the Slick Woody’s Burnt Wood Cornhole Set.
This unit is not only rated at the number of the best cornhole boards for 201by Ezvid Wiki but also follows all the requirements from ACA. It’s made of Baltic Birch plywood for a smooth and solid playing surface. In addition, the frames are made of Poplar hardwood that brings a sturdy construction.
One of the most fulfilling parts of creating your own cornhole sets is the design. You’ve already put in a lot of time and work to make the set, now you want to make sure it looks great so you can show it off to your friends. Before you get ready to prime and paint it, you must do some prep work.
Since the boards are made out of plywood, we need to get a nice base for our paint. The first step in the process is put primer on everything. I used a Rustoleum primer that sticks to anything. This is important to give your paint a solid surface to stick to. This process should be a very quick part, since you don’t have to worry about making it look perfect. One warning is that primer is nearly impossible to get off of anything (including yourself). I used a super cheap sponge brush to apply the primer so I could just toss it in the trash afterwards. DO NOT use a quality brush, as it will be ruined once this process is finished. This part doesn’t need to look great; just make sure all the wood is covered.

Believe it or not, the biggest key to getting plywood cut correctly is your attitude. Keep in mind, the associate who will be “operating” the saw doesn’t want to do it. They are usually understaffed, have a long work list, and have just cleaned up a mess that a rude customer left for them. And now, you show up. Everyday they get customers who try to monopolize their time, aren’t prepared with dimensions, demand perfection, insist that cuts be made beyond the scope or limitations of the equipment, or fall outside the boundaries of company policy. Be respectful from the start and the end result will be better than expected. Taking the time to prepare and establish a relationship with the associate cutting your plywood will more than pay for itself down the road.
On the other hand, this same associate “can and will” make perfect cuts, not charge you extra for extra cuts, and in some cases, offer you a “discount” on your material. It’s all about the approach.
Steps to Perfection
The steps listed below are actually quite simple and very easy to implement. My most recent experience reaffirms that the process works. For example, I am in the process of building Cornhole games for family and friends as gifts and for profit. I use good ¾ inch thick cabinet grade plywood which is expensive. The design I use results in “no waste”—if, of course, the cuts are accurate. I will come back to my studio very satisfied and will continue to buy not only my plywood from Home Depot, but also, the nuts, bolts, and tools I need in the future. This is, after all, what Home Depot wants…they don’t make money on the plywood or the labor involved in cutting it: they make their profit on the accessories and “add-ons”. A well managed store will bend over backwards to sell me a carriage bolt or better yet, a new jig-saw.
And the answer is…Don’t cheat…Take the poll first!
The right answer for increasing the perfection of your plywood cuts is the “lumber cart”. Why? For two reasons: 1): It makes the task of loading the panel saw much easier…turns a two person job into a one person job, and 2), the height of the cart is close to the height of the panel saw…makes loading easier and reduces the risk of damage.
Also note: It is advisable to load your plywood with the face of it to the back of the saw–because of the up-cut of the blade, less tear out will occur.
When all else fails…take a hike…
Like I said earlier, I’ve done this a lot…many of the lumber associates know me by name and don’t even question or challenge my approach. After all, I know their name, have submitted their name to corporate as “excellent customer service experience”…and as a result, the associates have been rewarded…they are pleased to see me knowing that I have the power to put bonuses in their pockets.
A simple script to perfection
Let air in and keep everything else out. That is all. Useful for when you need them and stylish for all the other times. Companies like WeatherTech and Husky Liners are obsessed with making sure that your window visors are a PERFECT fit on your vehicle. *we have all options.
Mud Flaps
Usually one of the first accessories for a driver who hates mud and dirt splashed up the side of their rig. Prevent rocks and other road debris from damaging the side of your vehicle with mud flaps. Again, WeatherTech, Husky Liners, and Bestop have every option under the sun when it comes to truck accessories like mud flaps.
Headlight Protection
Protect your costly headlights from scratches and cracks from road debris kicked back by other vehicles. WeatherTech has done the work to fit your specific headlights, now cover them up for with proper headlight protection that only takes a few minutes to install and will give you piece of mind while driving.
Choose a Size
Tailgate Size. These Cornhole boards always measure feet by feet and are intended for recreational use. They are lighter, making it easier to move them, and they usually cost less than regulation size boards do.
Regulation Size. For official Cornhole gameplay, opt for a regulation size set of boards that measure feet by feet.
The American Cornhole Organization (ACO) states in their official rules that boards must measure between 47.inches to 4inches long by 23.inches to 2inches wide.
Consider the Material
Official boards must be made of hardwood plywood; the minimum thickness of the surface of the board is ½-inch with a cross-section backing or – if there is no cross-section backing – is ¾-inch thick (according to the ACO rules).
The problem with wood boards is that they can be rather heavy, so if you want something a little lighter that you can store easily, opt for boards that have an aluminum frame.
