Test Results and Ratings
Why did this melodica win the first place?
I was completely satisfied with the price. Its counterparts in this price range are way worse. I really enjoy the design. It is compact, comfortable and reliable. And it looks amazing! The product is very strong. Its material is stable and doesn’t crack. I don’t know anything about other models from this brand, but I am fully satisfied with this product.
№2 – Amosic Melodica 37 Keys Piano Style Keyboard Standard Tone Suitable for Teaching and Playing with a Carry Bag
Why did this melodica come in second place?
I like this product. For such a low price, I didn’t even hope it to be any better. It’s decently made. Managers explained me all the details about the product range, price, and delivery. This is a pretty decent product that perfectly fitted the interior of our office. Seems that the material is good. It has a very beautiful color but I don’t really like the texture.
№3 – ammoon 32 Piano Keys Melodica Musical Instrument for Music Lovers Beginners Gift with Carrying Bag
Why did this melodica take third place?
I liked the design. We’ve been using it for 2 months and it still looks like brand new. The material is incredibly nice to the touch. It has a great color, which will suit any wallpapers. This price is appropriate since the product is very well built. It is inconvenient to use due to the size. I am going to get something different next time.
melodica Buyer’s Guide
Hohner Student 32
I play keyboard, but don’t always want to deal with electronics. So I got this melodica. Well, the keys are fairly uneven and the part where you insert the mouthpiece isn’t really angled steeply enough for me to play comfortably when using the short mouthpiece. Turn your hand so the edge is perpendicular to you and try to finger, say, Am6, and you’ll see what I mean. All that said, I love this instrument. It’s got everything you’ll ever need to write music or express yourself. It’s small, light and portable. I’d waterproof the case before I went traveling with it though.I think the sound is similar to a shruti box in the low register. If you can circular breathe, you can get these sound textures without spending on a good shruti. It’s as responsive as a good harmonica. I recommend it, especially to keyboard/pianists and harp players – it teaches you things about both.
Great Instrument for the Money!
Overall if you’re interested in a melodica and you’re a beginner, then you don’t need to look any further than this Hohner student model. It reminds me of the perfect combo between a harmonica and an accordion. There’s really nothing special to expect from a Melodica. Blow and play. This thing does a perfect job of doing just that. I’m sure there are other better ones that cost 3-times the price, and even more, but if you’re just getting started or want to experiment with a new instrument, this is a great way to get some instant gratification. I do enjoy using the tube mouthpiece so I can set the melodica on my lap and play. With practice, you can use the regular mouthpiece and hold the instrument upright like a horn. It’s made of plastic but it’s pretty thick and sturdy. Comes with a really nice case as well. Just store it when you’re finished and this thing will last you a good while. It is an oustanding price. Why the heck not? Instruments cost a lot of money. If you don’t have a ton of cash and want to try something new, this thing is perfect. Hohner has always been a good brand to me even with their low-end stuff.
Most melodicas are made of plastic, although some high quality melodicas are made of wood. There are many high quality plastic options available, but some prefer the deeper tone of the wooden construction.
High quality instruments of each material are available, and plastic is more commonly used by far. The added cost of a wooden melodica is not required to get a good sound and a high-quality instrument.
For Group Settings
If you plan to use your melodica(s) with a group, consider getting one of each voice range. Having an alto, soprano, tenor, and bass melodica will allows you to play a wider range of music as a group.
For soprano or alto melodicas to be used in a group or classroom setting, choose a melodica with a softer tone to control the noise when all the instruments are played together.
Prerequisites to Playing a Melodica
Melodicas are a great beginner instrument for children or adults who have never played an instrument before. They combine aspects of wind and keyboard instruments to provide a well-rounded education.
Before learning the melodica, some background experience in piano is recommended. This allows you to become comfortable with reading music and playing the notes with the right hand before adding a breathing component. While it is not required, this will make the transition to playing melodica easier overall.
Yamaha P37D 37-Key
The Yamaha P37D 37-Key melodica comes from a trusted company with a great track record for created high-quality, affordable instruments for students and professionals. This instrument is well-suited for beginners looking to learn a new instrument or for more serious musicians looking for a performance instrument.
The inner reeds are made of an anti-corrosive material designed to prolong the life of the instrument without needing costly repairs. These reeds are durable and provide stable tuning and intonation throughout the range of the melodica.
It includes the standard mouthpiece as well as an extension that allows the player to rest the melodica on their lap or a table to play with both hands. This gives you the freedom to play with one hand or to create a more versatile instrument played with both hands. You can easily switch between the two mouthpiece options as you decide which one you like best.
This model spans three full octaves, giving the player more versatility of melodies and chords played. You can play wider melodies and more key signatures with three octaves than you can with a 2-octave melodica.
One great feature of this melodica is that there isn’t a considerable amount of breath support needed to sustain notes. Some models require extra breath and effort to play or more notes simultaneously. This model allows you to breathe easily and play full chords without straining the breath too much. This allows for easy musical production no matter how many notes are played at once.
Tuning is simple and only requires a few basic tools, and previous customers agree that tuning takes only a few minutes. Taking the time to tune this melodica ensures that all notes are in tune for a considerable length of time afterward.
The only flaws of this model are its construction and its tone response. Plastic construction can be more flimsy than metal models. Although it is made of plastic, the material is sturdy and durable enough to last several years of use. The tone response can tend to be slower than other models.
The sound is still resonant and pleasant, but it may take more time to sound each note than some other melodicas available. These are minor flaws that don’t limit the musical capabilities of the instrument.
Other Products to Consider
There are hundreds of melodicas available today, and it was difficult to choose only two to recommend. These are some of my next choices that still give great sound quality and a long-lasting instrument in each price range.
Suzuki STUDY-32BLK Alto Melodion
This alto melodica has ½ octaves of keys that are lower in range than the typical soprano melodica. It can be played with one hand or two when rested on a flat surface, and the tone is clear and full. The pitches bend easily on this instrument, making it easy to control the tuning over time.
Perfect tuning that does not warp much over time is one of the key features of this instrument. Although minor tuning is required no matter the instrument, this particular melodica holds its tuning very well.
Hohner Performer 3Key
This is a model designed for advanced students and amateur performers who need a bright, clear tone. The construction is sturdy and durable, and the instrument can be played held in the hands or rested on the lap or a table.
The brass reed keys give you three full octaves, and a durable gig bag with an adjustable strap gives you a high quality way to carry the melodica.
Some customers report that the keys go out of tune more quickly than other models, and that this design requires substantial breath support to create a clear tone.
Best Melodica ever! Arjun, 09.06.201 I have been playing melodica for many years and I have previously owned a Suzuki, Yamaha and Hohner (instructor) melodicas but the tone quality and aesthetics of this one would probably be the best.

The addition of valves to the instrument allows you to control how much lung power is required to play, and how sensitive it is to your breath.
The best features of this Hammond melodica are that it is a highly professional instrument with a robust design.
While it is extremely expensive in relation to others on the market, this is because it is quite unique in relation to them.
Its sound and tune is almost impossible to beat, and is the perfect addition to a song with other instruments involved, making it great for band-play.
This Suzuki melodica is a very high quality and competitive instrument to the most expensive on the market.
It produces a loud and very in-tune sound and the keys react very well to touch without being sticky.
The addition of three different mouthpieces (a brass mouthpiece that rests outside pursed lips, a plastic mouthpiece and a tube) makes this instrument stand-out from others.
