model kit Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy model kit, right? No!

Acrylic Paints

Acrylic paints are now probably the most popular type of paint used by modellers in the modelling world; the paint can be easily applied using a brush or airbrush. Acrylic paints tend to be safer than other types; the drying time is also far quicker allowing models to be painted in hours rather than days.

Acrylic paints were traditionally used by artists however specific ranges were introduced for modellers in small pots; they are generally low odour and low toxicity in nature. The paint can also be thinned with water or alcohol, this also allow for easier cleaning of an airbrush.

There are a number of different brands of paint and all give good results, Tamiya paints are one of the widest ranges of acrylic paints, and are popular with most modellers. Revell and Humbrol also have ranges of acrylic paints aimed at the modeller. Xtracrylix are a UK company that produce paints covering R.A.F., Luftwaffe, Russian and American air forces in both modern and WWII eras.

The paints should be thinned if using an airbrush; the ratio can vary depending on the application however a 50:50 mix with the manufacturers own brand thinner, should be suitable for most airbrushing needs.

Lacquer Paints

Lacquer paint is very different from acrylic and enamel paints. Although it is highly toxic with a very strong smell and very flammable, it is also hard, durable and very shiny.

The shiny hard wearing coat is ideal for natural metal finishes and aircraft; it is also very popular with auto modellers giving cars that new fresh factory look. Radio control enthusiasts also make use of this hardwearing shiny paint with models which need to survive the real world knocks and bumps.

One of the most popular ranges of metallic lacquers is made by Alclad, these lacquers paints are applied to the surface of the model using an airbrush the room should also be very well ventilated area and with a protective mask. Alclad also supply an airbrush cleaner, this is highly recommended if you value your airbrush.

Whatever type of paint you are using you should wear a good respirator in a well-ventilated room when airbrushing.

Tips for choosing your 3D printer

Before starting, it’s important to know what features and properties are most important for your making needs. A schoolteacher wanting to introduce their classroom to the principles of STEM will probably prioritize safety, plug’n’play, and low-cost, whereas a mechanical engineer needing custom 3D printed prototypes will look for higher resolution, speed, and even multi-material capabilities.

3D Printer Technology: The majority of consumer 3D printers can be divided into two main categories: FDM (fused deposition modeling, also known as FFF) technology, and SLA (sterelithography). With FDM, plastic filament is heated and passed through an extruder, which deposits it layer by layer into a 3D shape that hardens as it cools. FDM technology is generally quite affordable, and allows for a range of materials (we’ll talk more about that later).

SLA 3D printing involves focusing a light source (UV lamp or laser) into a vat of photopolymer resin. The light hardens the resin into precise, predetermined patterns, building up the 3D object. Though not as common as FDM (due mainly to its higher cost, maintenance and post-processing needs), SLA has the advantage of creating much more precise and professionally finished 3D printed objects, and is therefore becoming more sought after for prototyping and end-use needs. In our 2013D Printer Buyer’s Guide, the SLA 3D printers are in a separate category at the end.

Build Volume: Most desktop 3D printers are quite limited in their size, but for household projects, this usually isn’t a problem. Some models, such as the Rostock MAX, are prized for their larger build volume. Keep in mind, however, that it is also quite common to 3D print multiple small parts of a design and assemble or glue them together afterwards.

3D Printing Materials: FMD 3D printers most commonly use PLA or ABS filaments. PLA is biodegradable and generally quite affordable, but it can be brittle and break easily. On the flipside, ABS is more flexible, yet requires a heated bed to print. Other FDM-friendly materials include nylon, bronze and copper composites, wood-based filaments, and more, most of which are available in a wide variety of colors. Keep in mind that some 3D printer companies require users to buy their proprietary filaments, which can drive up costs.

For SLA resins, color choices are more limited, and they can be more expensive, but for some designers, the smoother, higher-resolution finish is worth it.

Speed and Resolution: Consumer 3D printers are notorious for being slow. The majority range from around 50-100mm/s, but as the technology advances, so too will the speed. At the same time, many 3D printers are capable of achieving quite high resolutions, from 200 down to as little as 20 (keep in mind that the lower the actual number, the higher and better the resolution will be). Some 3D printer models give users the option of increasing the speed by producing thicker layers, thereby reducing the resolution. The acceptable trade-off between speed and resolution will entirely depend on your needs as a maker, so keep that in mind when choosing your 3D printer.

Others: Multiple extruders, heated beds, closed frames, USB or WiFi, DIY Kits…There is so much more to take into consideration before you buy a 3D printer. Do you want to print in multiple colors or materials? Then you’ll need a dual-extruder model. 3D printing with ABS or other specialty materials often requires a heated and/or enclosed print bed, both for consistency and safety. For classrooms or shared workspaces, WiFi connectivity can be considered a bonus, but USB remains the standard. And then there are the questions of software (open source or proprietary?), add-ons, and the option of buying a DIY Kit so you can build and customize the 3D printer yourself.

Line Made With “Low Stretch” Webbing

Line width. Pick a line that’s 2″ in width. Originally, slacklines only came in a 1″ width, but now are also offered at 2″. One inch lines are for advanced slackliners who are highlining and longlining. Two inch lines not only provide a wider balance platform, but also feature a ratchet system that’s easier to use.

Rigidity. Find a slackline with a rigid “low stretch” webbing (webbing is another name for the slackline material). The more rigid the line, the closer to the ground it can be set up. Less rigid lines sag more in the middle as you walk along, and need to be set higher. You’ll fall alot when you’re first learning… being closer to the ground is important! More rigid lines are also easier to balance on because they have less stretch and sway.

Ratchet System. Find a slackline that features a single lever-and-lock ratchet. This type of ratchet is similar to (but not the same) as the ratchet systems found at a local hardware store, and are good for quickly and easily tightening the line. They also feature a quick release when taking down the line.

Accessories. Look for a slackline kit that comes with a topline, or “helpline”, and a set of treeguards. The topline is setup above the slackline, providing a handhold while you get your balance. The treeguards are important for protecting the trees the slackline will be setup between, as well as protecting your line from getting worn through by rough bark.

Beginner Slackline Recommendations

Very little separates the following options. All are very good slacklines for beginners, and are of similar quality and materials. The biggest differences are between price and accessories.

Gibbon Classic TreePro Slackline Set

Like with any decent-sized purchase, make sure to do your research. Things like multiyear warranties are pretty standard on legit vapes these days, but always check the fine print! Also, make sure to check shipping and handling fees. They can definitely add up.

BQ Hephestos 2

What’s the best Prusa iclone? Read our guide to 2RepRap Prusa ikits on the market today, plus a review of the Original Prusa iMK2.

Did you know that the RepRap Prusa iis the most popular 3D printer in the world? It’s more widely used than machines made by Ultimaker, BCN3D and other big hitters of the desktop 3D printing world.

Original Prusa iMK2

The place where it all began. The Original Prusa iMKkit comes directly from the company founded and owned by Josef Prusa — Prusa Research — and this machine adheres to his exact specifications and quality assurance. The recently upgraded MK— now the Mk2S — features a raft of improvements over the standard Mk2, including a 31% larger build volume, auto mesh bed leveling, e3D Vhotend to name but a few. But most importantly, by buying this RepRap Prusa ikit you will be supporting its continued development. It’s not only the best Prusa ikit but it’s one of the best 3D printers on the market right now.

Anet A6

Confusingly, the Anet Ais a model upgrade over its wildly popular sibling, the Anet ADespite a raft of improvements to its frame structure and makeup — including switching the x-axis carriage rods from one on top of the other, to side-by-side — it is still entirely a RepRap Prusa ikit. Additionally, a larger LCD screen paired to a rotating knob gives a different, and supposedly easier experience navigating the printer’s menus.

Geeetech IX

The IX is a new addition to Geeetech’s line of RepRap Prusa ikits. With a low-cost design, this Prusa iclone emphasizes usability and quality. The frame is made out of piano black acrylic, and features include a build volume of 200 x 200 x 170 mm, a maximum print resolution of 100 microns, an LCD screen, a heated print bed, and connectivity via USB and SD card.

Folger Tech

Folger Technologies has an elegant but affordable variation of the RepRap Prusa ikit, with a frame constructed from laser cut acrylic plastic. This Prusa iclone kit comes with mostly everything you need to build your own machine, with the exception of an 8″x 8″ glass surface for the print-bed. An LCD screen with an SD card reader is also available as an optional extra. The same company offers another kit with an aluminum frame that’s not so pleasing to the eye (but it is easier on the wallet).

Sintron

The Sintron features an acrylic frame, which blends nicely with the steel rods to create a simply constructed, nice looking piece of machinery. The print area of 200 x 200 x 180 mm is typical for Prusa iprinters. An LCD 200controller is the interface by default, which includes an SD card slot for easy offline access. Other features include a heated print bed and a maximum print resolution of 100 microns.

MakerFarm Pegasus

Available in 8″, 10″ or 12″ sizes, MakerFarm’s successor to the i3v boasts quicker print speeds and a sturdier frame. Add to that the rapid build time (MakerFarm claim approximately hours to assemble this printer) and you’re looking at a tempting alternative to the other Prusa iclones on this list. The smallest of its sizes features a print bed  measuring 200 x 200 x 180mm.

Sunhokey Prusa i4

The name of this RepRap 3D printer is misleading; there’s no such thing as a Prusa iOr, at least, Josef Prusa hasn’t gotten round to designing one. Sunhokey are guilty of being over-excitable in trying to distinguish their Prusa iclone from the rest of the pack. Which is a pity, because the machine itself looks like a neat refinement, with a heavy metal base and a unique X-axis rotation design with the motor mounted to the extruder housing.

PSIQUE Aluminum

The Steel Pro is another metal-clad remix. It has a stronger frame laser cut from galvanized steel and is simple to assemble. However, though more compact and easier to transport than the Prusa ithat inspired it, it’s significantly heavier. What else? Oh, this RepRap Prusa ikit tends to rank high on the 3D Hubs monthly trend report, sitting pretty in the top 20 for the past three months.

RepRap France Rework 1.5

The Rework 1.is a remix of the base idesign by RepRap France. This RepRap Prusa ikit has a mm thick aluminum frame and a Y carriage for a platform within 200 mm stops. The Hexagon hotend is a fully machined metal nozzle that can accommodate several diameters from 0.3mm to 0.5mm. The RAMPS 1.controller can support up to two nozzles and is capable of layer resolutions up to 100 microns.

ReprapUniverse Achatz Edition

All the 3D printed parts on the Achatz Edition were fabricated in ABS plastic at low speeds on ReprapUniverse machines, guaranteeing the highest possible quality of parts. And if a part breaks during the assembly of the Prusa ikit, they’re happy to send you a free replacement. They have also made some improvements to the base design, like Aluminium Z Motor Couplers, a Trespa Y Carriage Plate, and enhanced frame rigidity using High-Quality Trespa (HPL). Optional extras not included in the base kit are an LCD screen for SD card connectivity and a fan upgrade for the extruder.

Silent compressors are very expensive!

On/off switch is very useful when it comes to quiet work environment. They mostly come together with the compressor.

Also, check our glossary of terms in order to get acquainted with the basic parameters that you should pay attention to when choosing the right compressor.

Choosing The Right Airbrush Makeup Kit

For a flawless complexion, nothing beats airbrush makeup.

Professional makeup artists have used this technique for ages, but as hi-def images become more commonplace, everyday beauty buffs are looking to get in on the action.

Is Airbrush Makeup better than traditional Makeup

There are advantages to both types of makeup application. Both can be used to create an even, flaw-free complexion. But if you’re looking for lightweight coverage, nothing beats airbrush technology.

When you use traditional makeup, it means that you’re using conventional coverage products. This typically refers to concealer, foundation, and setting powder. These products can be applied with brushes, sponges, or fingers.

Traditional makeup can be used to create an even finish, but it tends to have a thick consistency. Because it often has to be layered, it can take awhile to achieve optimal results. Due to the widespread use of traditional cosmetics, however, there are many available color options. Women with unusual skin tones may have an easier time finding traditional foundation that matches the pigment of their skin.

Airbrush makeup, on the other hand, requires a number of tools. This includes the airbrush gun and an air compressor. These must be used in tandem with a special airbrush foundation. Because the foundation is applied via gun, it has to have a very thin consistency. It goes on like a mist, covering the face in a thin layer of pigment. This creates a natural looking complexion. People who feel weighed down by traditional makeup application may prefer airbrush makeup, as it is much lighter than regular foundation.

Airbrush Compressor

When choosing a compressor, pressure is important. Check to see that the PSI, or pounds per square inch, meets cosmetic guidelines. This metric controls the way the pigment is projected, and smaller PSIs are recommended for the detailed work needed for makeup applications.

The Airbrush Foundation

There are three main types of airbrush foundation. To choose the best foundation for your needs, it’s important to understand the differences.

Alcohol-based airbrush makeup is used infrequently, but it’s known for its impressive staying power. This type of airbrush makeup can last for up to five days. Because it is made primarily of alcohol, however, it’s not suitable for daily wear. It is also known for staying true to color, no matter how long it stays on the skin.

Silicone-based airbrush make up is more popular than alcohol-based alternatives. This type of airbrush makeup blends in impeccably with skin. It also stays over long periods of time. When makeup is applied to the skin, the skin reacts to the cosmetic intruder by producing moisture. Because of the silicones, however, the skin is incapable of breaking down this type of makeup. No matter what, it doesn’t dissolve. This type of makeup does have a tendency to darken after application, so it’s best to choose a shade lighter than your actual skin tone.

Water-based foundatio n – This produces a matte finish, which makes it camera-ready. It’s a popular choice for news anchors and other television personalities. Because it is water-based, however, it does react to the moisture produced by the skin, like oil and sweat. Also, because it provides a matte finish distinct from natural skin texture, it needs to be applied all over the face. If it isn’t, there will be a noticeable demarcation between the natural skin and the airbrush foundation. This type of makeup tends to darken after application, so wearers are often advised to experiment with various shades before settling on one match.

When applied properly, airbrush foundation should feel extremely lightweight. If it feels heavy on the skin, it means you’ve applied the makeup with too heavy a hand. To ensure correct coverage, don’t pull all the way back on the trigger while applying.

Makeup lovers new to the art of airbrush may also be tempted to mix formulas. This is a recipe for disaster. Because the various airbrush formulations dry at different rates, combining creates a streaky mess rather than an even complexion.

Other items included in kit

While the airbrush, the compressor, and the makeup are the main components of the airbrush experience, there are other items that can enhance the process.

You can augment an airbrushed complexion with airbrush highlighter, blush, bronzer, and shimmer. These products are also lightweight, and they can add incredible dimension to the face.

Blush and bronzer can be used to contour the cheeks, and highlighter and shimmer can be used to provide a dewy sheen along the cheekbones and brow.

Tickled Pink Airbrush Kit

This popular airbrush makeup kit uses water-based makeup to provide even, poreless coverage. The makeup is even infused with aloe juice to ensure the perfect finish.

Each kit comes with three shades of foundation, which enables each user to mix and match to create the correct pigment. The kit also includes a professional-grade airbrush, and airbrush holder, an air hose, and a small compressor.

Designed for at home use, this kit has the power of a professional kit but is rendered in a convenient size. The compressor also has three settings, which gives the user greater control over air pressure and application.

All of these parts are stored in a chic case embellished with a pink stripe. The Tickled Pink Airbrush Kit is a great starter package for makeup aficionados interested in airbrush foundation.

Belloccio Professional Airbrush Makeup System

This airbrush system is easy to use and highly effective.

It comes with a water-based foundation that is packed with antioxidants and moisturizers. This gives all skin types a healthy, natural-looking glow.

To ensure that all users learn to apply airbrush foundation effectively, the kit comes with a DVD that goes over setup, airbrushing technique, and more.

There are many components to the Belloccio Airbrush System. There is the mini compressor, which has three airflow control settings, and the gravity feed airbrush, which enhances accuracy.

The kit also comes with four foundation shades and a moisturizing primer that can be used before or after the makeup application. There is also a blush, shimmer, and bronzer set, which helps users accentuate their natural features.

Belloccio also includes three bonus products. The concealer can hide dark circles and blemishes, and the makeup blending sponge is great for blending powders and creams. There is also an airbrush finishing spray, which is the perfect way to set your makeup.

Dinair Airbrush Makeup Kit Personal Pro

The Dinair kit is perfect for makeup artists who want to create glamorous looks. The all-speeds air compressor and CX Beauty airbrush combine to create impeccable coverage.

The kit also comes with four foundation shades and five bonus colors. These pigments include an eyeliner product, a blush, a brow pigment, and a shimmer.

This kit can also be used for self tanning purposes, and it comes stocked with a facial tanner.

The Dinair Moist and Dewy Moisturizer keeps the skin hydrated all day long, and the Dinair Corrective Concealer is the perfect way to hide imperfections.

Pentax K-S3

DSLRs from smaller manufacturers shouldn’t be overlooked. The Pentax K-Shas an excellent price, along with features that are hard to find on entry-level models, like weather-sealing and wi-fi.

Pull Quote

A rotary tool’s versatility makes it a valuable addition to any garage workshop, craft room, or office.

In addition to basic repairs around the house, rotary tools are useful for craft endeavors like wood carving, jewelry making, glass engraving, and more. Once you have the basic tool it’s the bits and attachments that really expand your capabilities. A rotary tool is especially valuable when workspace is at a premium because it can do the work of several bulkier tools. Celina Muire, a woodworker from Austin, Texas, told me that she uses her Dremel to do everything from predrilling holes and sanding to cutting nails from recycled palettes. A Wirecutter editor uses his Dremel for tasks ranging from cutting bolts to length to cleaning out an espresso machine boiler. The more you use the tool the more uses you will find for it.

How we picked

Most rotary tools come with a set of bits, similar to a drill-bit kit, with attachments for tasks such as cutting, sanding, drilling, and polishing. But there are plenty of others. The tools are usually offered with various kits of bits at different prices; however, simply choosing the lowest-priced kit isn’t always the best idea and may end up costing you more in the long run if you discover that you want to expand your tool’s capabilities, because the bits and attachments included in these kits can cost more than twice as much to buy individually. We factored in the usefulness of the included accessories when evaluating each kit.

Bits attach to the drill using either a collet (a metal collar with prongs) and collet nut (which tightens over the collet), or a universal chuck, like you’d find on a power drill. Collets come standard with most kits and are the preferred method for certain tasks like routing (hollowing). They come in different sizes, and can be switched out to accommodate bits of different diameters. A universal chuck is usually quicker to use, and you don’t need to switch it out depending on the bit you want to use. The drawback is that a chuck doesn’t grip the bits as securely as the collet system.

In addition to bits, a variety of attachments are available to make tasks easier. Some of the more useful attachments for most beginners are the safety shield (which helps keep debris and sparks contained when cutting or grinding) and the flex shaft (a 36-inch long flexible cord with a thin tip). You grip the flex shaft like a pencil, letting you work more accurately on detailed tasks like engraving and jewelry making. Flex shafts were available for all the models we tested, either included in the kit or as add-ons.

Besides accessories, power was the most important thing to most of the experts we interviewed. Rotary tools rely on speed and not torque for their power. The lack of torque gives the user more control, allowing for more precision, John Hauter of Dremel explained to me. Most of the tools available are in the range of 5,000 to 30,000 rpm, with some offering speeds as high as 35,000 rpm. But most people need only 28,000 to 30,000 rpm for craft or home repair projects.

Rotary tools come in cordless and corded models, but we recommend corded for most people. A majority of the experts we interviewed favored corded models because they have more power and do not require down time for recharging. Still, a cordless tool can be convenient if you’re out of reach of an outlet, so we didn’t rule them out, and if you do prefer a cordless tool, we do have a pick below.

Weight, vibration, and ergonomic design are three factors particularly important for detailed work and projects that require prolonged use. Some of the lower-cost models we tested were twice as heavy (to 3½ pounds vs. to pounds) as pricier models, and had negative user reviews regarding excessive vibration, which can make tasks like engraving and carving a challenge.

We only considered models with variable speed settings. They offer more versatility than single-speed tools.

Using the above criteria, we selected nine tools for testing: five corded and four cordless models.

How we tested

We devised several tests to evaluate each tool’s power, detailing ability, comfort, and handling.

Glass engraving: We used a diamond engraving bit to trace a design taped to the inside of a glass. After outlining the design we used a silicone carbide grinding bit to fill it in. We evaluated a tool’s power by its ability to carve into a hard surface, and its precision by its grip, handling, and the ability to control vibration while creating the design. We also took into account how easy it was to change bits, because this project required us to use bits of different diameters.

Nail cutting: We hammered ¼-inch-thick steel nails into a piece of wood and then used each tool to cut them off as close to the wood as possible. This test judged the tool’s power and ability to cut through metal, the ease with which we could maneuver the tool to cut, and the ability to control it at a high speed.

Polishing: This test was less about power and more about control. We polished silver spoons and removed rust from and sharpened a set of old garden tools to judge how each handled during a longer duration task and its effectiveness for cleaning and polishing.

In addition to these formal tests I also used each of the tools for several hours on different ceramic and jewelry projects, like sanding inconsistencies and excess glaze on the surface of my ceramic pieces after firing. When making the jewelry, I used the tool to grind down castings and to do fine sanding and polishing of rings and pendants.

The Dremel 3000 has the best combination of power, comfort, handling, and price that we found, and it comes with the standard bits most people will need to get started right away. It is lightweight and comfortable to hold thanks to its ergonomic design and soft rubber grip.

The 3000 has a 1.2-amp motor that goes up to 32,000 rpm. Though not as powerful as the speedier Dremel 4000 and Dremel 8220, the 3000 held its own in our test shearing off nails we’d driven into wood. It easily cut through the nails, and because of its smaller size, it was easier to control and maintain a consistent pressure. This consistency also helped to reduce the “skipping” that occurred with several of the models we tried. We’d be happy using it on anything from cutting drywall to removing rust, sharpening garden tools, and removing grout.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

One slight drawback to the 3000 is its limited control over speed. It has five set speeds ranging from 5,000 to 32,000 rpm. The speed settings are numbered through 5, but you’ll have to look in the manual to translate those to rpm ranges. The Dremel 4000, 8220, and both Proxxon models we tested have either a dial or a slide that allows finer-grained, continuous control over speed.

Update

All the starter kits mentioned in this list come with the latest and advanced Raspberry Pi Single Board Computer.

FUNDAMENTALS

So you’re thinking about building a model car. Maybe you put together a few kits when you were younger and are returning to the hobby, or maybe you’re picking up a kit at the hobby shop for the first time. Either way, you’d probably like a little direction toward what tools and supplies you’ll need to get started.

In the next few pages, you’ll see tools for almost every technique at every level of car modeling. To keep you pointed in the right direction, I’ve divided the list into beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels, and provided a little insight into what tools work best for certain techniques.

The first list contains everything you’ll need if you’re starting with a kit and an empty workbench, and aren’t sure what you need to get going. The rest of the lists will give you a good idea of what you’ll need as you progress beyond the basics into more advanced techniques. To help you plan your budget, I’ve included an average price for each item, along with a photograph, so you’ll know what to look for when you shop.

All of the supplies for this article were gathered from local hobby shops and mail-order houses, and the prices listed generally reflect the full retail price for each item. If you watch for sales and shop around though, you’ll be able to save some money.

Attaching clear parts to a model can be tricky. Using too much regular model cement can soften and distort the parts, and superglue can “frost” their surfaces and ruin them. Water-based glues likes Elmer’s Glue-All and Microscale’s Micro Kristal Klear are great for attaching clear parts; they’re stronger than you’d think, they won’t harm the plastic, and any excess glue is easy to clean off with a cotton swab and a little water.

Building.

The advanced building supply list is loaded with tools that’ll help you modify parts and assemble them more easily. If you’re thinking about doing a little bodywork like chopping a top or opening up panels, invest in a good fine-toothed razor saw. A rechargeable motor tool will help, too, particularly if you’re planning to do extensive body modifications or are thinking about tackling cast-resin body parts or kits. A good set of small pliers will help you handle and fold up delicate photoetched metal detail parts. A scriber will sharpen up panel lines, and a small set of detail files will let you work in tight places easily.

Power Source

Most interactive toys nowadays need some kind of power source to make them function. Their lights, movement and speech are powered by built-in or removable batteries. The advantage of built-ins is its compactness; this feature also is safer for the younger crowd. These power sources (usually Lithium-Polymer) can be charged via embedded solar panels, through standard power adapter plugs or USB cables.

Ease of Assembly

Does the programmable robot kit come in as a buy-and-play package, or is some assembly required? If so, are there added tools or soldering needed to start playing? Assembly time can either take a few minutes (for beginner robot toys), or hours and hours of patience (for advanced and complex robotics systems).

Scoring Criteria

Our 100+ hours of research includes user reviews (both positive and negative), features, price, age level, skill level, industry feedback, manufacturer reputation, product design and durability, expandability, learning potential and assembly requirements.

Scribbler 2

The Scribbler is an excellent robot toy for teaching programming courses. It is an open-source device and equipped with interesting sensors that do many things. The programming courses have varying degrees of difficulty to ease you in the fascinating world of robotics.

Sphero 2.0

Ollie is the more adventurous cousin of Sphero, coming in from the same manufacturer. This programmable robot is faster and can move around obstacles placed in its path. Use your smartphone and connect via Bluetooth to make it flip, drift, spin and run wild! Something this fun takes a while to get the hang of. The built-in LED lights change depending on its status- i.e. it turns red when at rest. This nifty robot toy can be customized accordingly with a dazzling array of hubcaps and wheels to navigate outdoor and indoor terrain.
