Just read here for my top 3 recommendations. Why are these 3 shift knobs on top of my list? Well read on… You see I’m an average member of the public just like you and the main reason I decided to publish a review website on shift knobs is because I was looking for one not so long ago.

So, what exactly would anyone want to know about shift knobs? I know most of us don’t really care much about the history and the origin, all we want to know is which of them is the best. shift knobs Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy shift knobs, right? No!

Gear & Gadgets

The Cost of Poor Shifter Design

Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge products with the eight-speed ZF transmission (Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300) had something called the Monostable shifter. It worked like a joystick. Push it forward for reverse, pull it back for drive, and the shifter automatically returns to the center position.

Remove the Old Shift Knob

Most knobs simply attach by means of a threaded connection on the shift lever. Some vehicles feature additional locking components under the boot, so a little research into your specific application may be a good idea. Another factor to consider is that some states require the shift pattern to be present on any vehicle with a manual transmission. It may be wise to check your local laws before buying any pricey accessories.

Complete Installation

At this point, you can simply slip the new shift knob onto the shaft and attach it according to the instructions included with the kit. It will likely be a mirror of the process you just used to remove the old shift knob.

Shift knobs are one of the best ways to customize the interior of your vehicle and, with so many options available at reasonable prices; you can change your shift knob as quickly as you change your clothes (if you want). Show your personality by finding the right shift knob to express who you are to the world and bring a little style to your daily commute.

Volkswagen’s trademark golfball shifter is one of the reasons we like to row our own in the Golf GTI. The optional dual-clutch automatic is one of the best on the market, but only those who shift their own gears and make use of their left leg can treat themselves to the dimpled knob and pleasantly light throws of this classic shifter..

Honda Civic Si

Honda just nails the ergonomics on this one. The metal top to the shift knob feels cool in your palm. Leather trim lets you grip the shifter easily, and the red stitching gives it the right touch of style. It helps, of course, that Honda makes one of the slickest and most entertaining manual gearboxes in the business, helping make the Civic Si a joy to drive.

Jaguar XJL

The inside of the Jaguar XJL feels like a high-end speedboat. Our Four Seasons XJL was a true British luxo-barge, and the fancy retractable metal rotary gear knob reminded you of that every time you started the engine. Each rotation is nicely weighted, and the knob has the right amount of heft. It neatly drops into place when the car shuts off, and rises up to greet you when it’s time to hit the road.

Volvo XC90

Fact: You buy a G-Wagen because it looks cool. And while the overall design of the boxy G hasn’t changed relatively much since it served as a military truck, the interiors details sure have. Quilted leather seats are a lovely addition, but the shifter has a lot of class on its own. The hollow, rectangular-shaped lever is topped with supple leather and an extra-snazzy embossed AMG logo.

Pagani Huayra

What good is a supercar’s sequential seven-speed single-clutch automatic transmission if it doesn’t have a badass exposed shifter to seal the deal? You know, like in the Huayra. The bizarre, steampunk-y skeleton look speaks to the exacting mechanical obsessiveness of the car’s namesake Horacio Pagani.

This week, Ford let me test the first-ever haptic shifter knob on a Shelby GT500. The elegantly simple device vibrates every time the car’s engine hits 3000 rpm, reminding the driver it’s time to change gears.

But this particular device also uses an LED screen on the top of the shift knob to tell you what gear the car has engaged.

Made from printed plastic, an LED screen, and the vibrating motor stolen from an Xbox 360 controller, the high-tech shifter handle was created by Zach Nelson, a Ford mechanical engineer who has been working on the company’s new Open XC program.

Open XC allows developers to connect to Ford cars and trucks through the car’s diagnostic port and read real-time data about the car via a Bluetooth connection.

Once the device, slightly larger than a pack of cigarettes, is connected to the port, Nelson could read dozens of data points on a Bluetooth-enabled touch pad. “I only needed three data points for this device, the car’s engine speed, vehicle speed and what gear it is in,” he said.

I, however, could not tell which mode we were in during my short drive, since I was simply trying to get the revs high enough to make the device buzz again. It worked flawlessly. “This could be used to help drivers keep their eyes on the road and might even help teach some people to drive a stick,” Nelson said.

Indeed. But more importantly, the shifter knob demonstrates how agile the new program Ford created is and how the open-source philosophy creates a new kind of collaboration for an automaker.

Ford has not said whether the vibrating shifter knob will ever go into production but the plans to make them will be available on OpenXC’s site. “Based on the nature of open source tools, our goal is to provide innovation such as the haptic shift knob to the open source community,” said Craig Daitch, a Ford spokesman.

Open-source programs are nothing new to the rest of the world. Computer programmers and software developers have a long tradition of sharing information and creating platforms where crowdsourcing and testing make a program better.

Automakers, however, have traditionally held all of this information very close to their vests, relying on either in-house talent or contractors to create new technology. Now, nearly anyone can contribute.

What Ford has done is give developers easy access to a lot of the information cars create so they can find interesting things to do with the info. It’s worth noting the device does not control the vehicle, but rather allows access to that information. It’s the difference between knowing the gas pedal is pushed 1percent down and being able to push the gas pedal down 1percent.

Thousands of developers have already joined the OpenXC program, which began in September 2011, Daitch said. Other current projects include a backup camera that uses a simple web cam; a night-vision camera that taps into the car’s infrared collision cameras; a Bluetooth head-up display; and a retro gauge that can display vehicle data drivers normally can’t see.

Nelson said other automakers could use the system created by Ford to apply to their vehicles as well.
